Washoe Lake State Park and Picnic Areas in Reno, Nevada

Nestled between Reno and Carson City, Washoe Lake State Park offers a diverse array of outdoor activities, making it a prime destination for nature enthusiasts. The park's expansive picnic areas provide the perfect setting for family gatherings and leisurely afternoons.

 

The park features 49 campsites, each equipped with a table, grill, and fire ring. Open year-round, these sites can be reserved in advance. Amenities include two comfort stations, one with a shower, and accommodations for RVs up to 45 feet. Loop A offers water and utility hookups at all 24 sites, with a dump station available. The camping limit is seven days within a 30-day period.

 

For larger gatherings, the Group Area near the main day-use section and boat launch can be reserved for both day and overnight use. Facilities include a covered pavilion, restrooms, 20 picnic tables, barbecue grills, power, lighting, a sink, counters, a sandy volleyball court, and horseshoe pits.

 

Day-use areas are strategically located at the Wetlands, South Beach, Main Entrance, North Ramp, and Little Washoe. Each area is equipped with comfort stations and developed picnic sites. The main access location stands out as the largest day-use area, featuring lawns, sandy beach areas, and shade trees, providing a serene environment for visitors.

 

Boating enthusiasts can access launch ramps at the main day-use area, North Ramp, and Little Washoe, with designated boat trailer parking sites provided. Equestrian facilities are available at the Main Entrance Area and North Ramp. The main area includes an arena, corrals, a horse washing station, and a covered barbecue area with tables, a grill, sink, counter space, power, water, and lighting. Camping is permitted for both tents and RVs, with large parking areas facilitating easy horse trailer access. This area can accommodate groups of up to 200. The North Ramp facility is designated for day use only and offers restrooms, parking, and picnic tables.

 

Hunting with shotguns is permitted in specified areas during the hunting season, from October through February. Both lakes are home to channel and bullhead catfish, wipers, white bass, and Sacramento perch, with excellent shore fishing opportunities at Little Washoe, South Beach, and North Ramp. Trails throughout the park cater to both motorized and non-motorized uses, accommodating hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrian riders. Motorized trails are limited to the Virginia Range, east of the park. Maps are available at the park office and information kiosks.

 

The park also offers programs and special presentations upon request. Notably, the American Discovery Trail traverses the park, providing a unique way to experience Nevada's rugged backcountry. Wi-Fi access is currently available, with various pricing plans. The park is open seven days a week, 365 days a year.

 

Visitors are reminded to adhere to park regulations, including keeping pets on a leash no longer than six feet when within 200 feet of a camping or picnic area, and refraining from driving on the beach. The use of drones or any remote-controlled aircraft is not allowed. Practicing Leave No Trace principles ensures the preservation of the park's natural beauty for future generations.
